Space-variant active vision: Definition, overview and examples

چکیده
-The term space-variant vision was introduced in the late 1980s to refer to sensor architectures based on a smooth variation of resolution across the workspace, like that of the human visual system. The use of such sensor architectures is rapidly becoming an important factor in machine vision in which the constraints of size, weight, cost and performance must be jointly optimized. The structure of this paper consists of four parts. A review of the four genetic architectures for vision will be presented, providing a context for the term "active vision", and a justification for the importance, and the connection between, space-variant architectures and active vision methods. A brief quantitative review of the specific space-variant properties of primate visual cortex topography will be provided, in the context of sensor design. The engineering and algorithmic problems that are associated with exploiting space-variant systems will be stated. Examples of several recently constructed miniature space-variant active vision systems will be briefly reviewed, along with a brief discussion of solutions to the basic problem areas in space-variant vision. Space-variant architecture shares many features, and some important differences, with the "pyramid architecture" that is more familiar in

متن کاملImplementations and Implications of Foveated Vision
Humans are equipped with "space-variant" vision, i.e. a concentration of photoreceptors, retinal ganglion cells and other visual resources at the central fovea, and a sparser coverage of other regions within a wide 180 degree field of view. If the entire visual field was equipped with foveal ganglion cell resolution, then the brain would have to cope with approximately 350 times more visual inf...

The use of visual representations in which pixel-size and local neighborhood topology are not constant is termed space-variant vision. This is the dominant visual architecture in all higher vertebrate visual systems, and is coming to play an important role in real-time active vision applications in the form of log-polar, foveating pyramid, and related approaches to machine vision. The breaking ...

Cellular Neural Networks are very suitable to realize single-chip focal-plane image processing for artificial vision in the context of space-variant active vision. A new solution is presented for optical flow computation in continuous time, by a differential method based on the equation of continuity and the smoothness constraint.
متن کاملFast Space-variant Image Analysis Through Steerable Gabor-like Filters
The log-polar image geometry, first introduced to model the space-variant topology of the human retina receptors in relation to the data compression it achieves, has become popular in the active vision community for the important algorithmic benefits it provides. Despite these advantages, foveated sensing has not been widely used due to the lack of specific image processing tools. We demonstrat...
